If you are perspiring heavily, you are losing salt, even if you are drinking enough water to avoid dehydration. Lack of salt can make you just as sick as lack of water. If you get severely dehydrated, you may have trouble keeping plain water down. A rehydration drink will help you maintain your salt balance and rehydrate. It is absorbed faster and more easily than plain water.
You can use commercial sports drinks for this purpose, although most are excessively sweet and should probably be diluted with plain water.
Alternatively, you can make your own rehydration drink with the following cheap, simple ingredients:
